Over 20,000 Myanmar women stay illegally in Dehong: daily
More than 20,000 Myanmar women have married Chinese men and are living illegally in the Dehong Dai and Jingpo autonomous prefecture in southwest China’s Yunnan Province, a Chinese government-owned daily reported last week. The Global Times quoted Yu Mayue, director of the Standing Committee of the Dehong People’s Congress, as saying a survey by the legislature of Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture found that between 20,000 and 30,000 Myanmar women have married Chinese men and live without proper documents in Dehong, which borders Myanmar’s Kachin State. Myanmar’s Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement believes most of the women were victims of trafficking and forced to marry Chinese men.
